Fishing for Controversy

Mark Evans fancies himself a superhero, fighting environmental crime in Michigan waters. His villains are carp, dogfish and gar, bottom feeders with bad reputations for turning clear water muddy. His weapons are bows and arrows. On a good night, he and his guests might kill 50 fish.
Thursday night wasn't a good night on Lower Straits Lake in Commerce Township. With a lopsided orange moon peeking over the treetops and casting shadows from huge homes nearby, Evans, his son and two other men in jeans and sweatshirts fired arrow after arrow.
They killed 10 fish. The next night, they nailed 43 on the same lake.
Critics say Evans is a blood hunter killing for fun, all but shooting fish in a barrel. His claims of environmental benefits are dubious, they say. Some lakefront residents - annoyed by his loud generator powering the 5,500 watts of halogen lights on the pontoon - want him gone.
His sport is legal, if controversial.
